From South Bound Brook to the Griggstone Causeway

Here's a map of the D&R Canal

There are 2 branches: the Main Canal that goes from New Brunswick to Trenton (on the upper right side of the map) and the Feeder Canal that goes along the Delaware River (on the left side of the map).

I'm going to take you on a tour of the Main Canal.

We'll start from South Bound Brook, New Jersey.

Let's go south to the beginning of the canal in New Brunswick....

A little history as we cross the bridge towards New Brunswick....

and the sign next to that one

This is something that you would only know if you were crossing on foot (or a bike)...

This is a spillway (a nice dry one)...

What is a spillway? Read the sign...

How they keep the water from rising too high on the canal...

and there goes the water spilling out to the river....

This is how the canal looks for miles and miles and miles. Not bad....

Now we're coming to the crossing at East Millstone along the Millstone River. Looks like another good place to start biking from next time....

Back on the trail...

Canoes on the canal....

Next crossing is Blackwell Mills Canal house built the year the canal opened in 1835.

and this is part of the canal house on the other side of the bridge....

enough sightseeing....

a kayaker on the canal....

Oh no. Not another spillway....

Now we're at the Griggstone Causeway where they rent canoes and kayaks....

Cool picture by the boat house....

Looks like it's time to head back and call it a day.
