Biking Manhattan

First, a words of explanation about how I do it:
Take a 2000 VW Bug (manual shift, preferably)
Clear out junk.
Fold down back seat.

Gently insert bicycle in back of car making sure to get as much of it inside the car as possible.

Next, load up as much stuff as needed for the day (and don't forget the helmet).

Apply bungee cord to trunk being extremely careful not to let it snap up in your face...

Close trunk and drive...

... to SIPA
where you will find plenty of legal parking on Amsterdam and 118th on a Sunday morning

riding past the Law School through the hallowed gates on Amsterdam

and right out the other end onto Broadway and down the hill to Riverside...

Ever stopped to take a good look at Riverside Church?

Who's that buried in Grant's Tomb?

I love the inscription over the entrance. ...

Back to the entrance to Riverside Church...

and another view...

past International House...

and down to the best entrance to the Hudson River Park (on 125th)

Going up the river first to the GW Bridge

I love to look up large structures like this from their base. I used to do it frequently when walking around the World Trade Center on the way to the office...

Did you know that there's a little red lighthouse under the GW Bridge?

This is probably online somewhere but I thought I'd take a picture anyway...

Seems that before they built the bridge in 1931, this lighthouse was vitally important to ships which kept running aground on the banks of the Hudson...

Looking up the river from the bridge...

and south....

the view from under the bridge....

riding across the walkway on the bridge...

nice view...

Note the barbed wire...

Looking down from waaay up on the bridge

When you come to this spot, take a look at this sign...

and then look down...

Would someone actually jump? Yes, unfortunately...

Nice view of Manhattan

there's a boat landing under the Jersey side of the bridge..

and the Jersey side of the river..

more warnings to potential jumpers...

looking back to NYC...

and here's the road that goes along the Jersey side.
Looks like a great place to ride...

I took many more pictures of the ride down to the Battery but continued them on another blog post...
Bye for now!
